Place value FAQs
Place value bingo works across KS1 and KS2. Pupils fill a grid with numbers; you call out a description such as “four tens and three ones”, and they cover the number that matches. Dice games work too: pupils roll three dice, then arrange the digits to make the largest number they can.
Move pupils through concrete, pictorial and abstract representations rather than starting with digits on a page. Base 10 blocks, place value counters and arrow cards let children see that the 3 in 30 is worth ten times the 3 in 3. Real numbers help too, so ask pupils what each digit is worth in their town’s population.
Place value means the value of a digit depends on where it sits in a number. In 452, the 4 is worth 400, the 5 is worth 50 and the 2 is worth 2. Each column is worth 10 × the column to its right, and the rule continues past the decimal point into tenths, worth one tenth of one whole.
Practical activities sit well alongside worksheets. Try digit card ordering, human number lines where pupils hold a digit each and rearrange themselves, or “guess my number” using more than and less than clues. A place value concertina is worth making once, because the same resource carries pupils from Year 1 to Year 6.
