Why is primary school tuition so effective?

Tuition at primary school is generally used for one of two purposes:

  • To plug gaps that have emerged, consolidate understanding and build confidence in maths or English.
  • To accelerate a child’s learning with a more personalised programme of maths or English lessons.

The earlier a child can be supported in their learning the greater the impact of the tuition – which is why we recommend starting at primary school age rather than waiting till GCSE or A level.

Private tuition is a popular choice for many schools and parents because lessons can be targeted entirely to each individual child’s gaps. According to studies by the leading educational research centre the Education Endowment Foundation, one to one tuition can add up to 5 months’ progress to a child’s learning.

Trusted primary school tutors with years of teaching experience

Here’s how our in schools and at home maths programmes work

Primary school tuition in school

  1. Schools choose which pupils they’d like to support with one to one teaching. The majority of our primary schools use the tuition to support 6-12 year olds eligible for Pupil Premium.
  2. Pupils start with an online diagnostic assessment to identify learning gaps and identify the most appropriate sequence of lessons.
  3. Each pupil receives their own personal Third Space Tutor for weekly lessons in our online learning environment. All tutors are background checked (DBS-equivalent) and undergo our high-quality training programme.
  4. Teachers receive regular progress reports to understand pupil progress and inform their own in class planning and teaching.
  5. Schools also receive full access for all staff to the Third Space Learning Maths Hub of primary level resources. This includes a full mastery scheme of learning, ready to go lesson slides aligned with White Rose, Fluent in Five, Rapid Reasoning, CPD videos for all staff and much more.

Primary school tuition at home

  1. You select the day and time each week that you want your child’s maths tuition to regularly occur in our online portal. We connect your child with a maths specialist tutor who has completed our tutor training programme.
  2. Your child logs on and is connected to their private tutor and they work through a personalised sequence of lessons and school work each week.
  3. We’ll match them up with their own personal private tutor and their adventure will begin. All of our tutors are fully background checked (DBS-equivalent) and have received rigorous training in delivering online one-to-one maths tuition.
  4. In between lessons, children have access to lots of additional maths worksheets and activities to keep them engaged. From decimals to times tables to fractions, you name it, we’ve got it!
  5. You are kept up to date through weekly reports and can reschedule, or add additional lessons in their own parent portal.

Why thousands of schools and parents choose Third Space Learning

The Third Space Learning model of primary school tuition has been developed over several years. Each pupil connects to their own personal qualified teacher who has been specially trained to teach online maths lessons to children from 6 to 12 years old.

Over several weeks a child will then follow a bespoke sequence of lessons following the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 primary maths national curriculum.

For pupils receiving private tutoring while at school, their programme of lessons will continue all term, adapting to the requirements of their year group and needs. For example in Year 6, their schoolwork and tuition will be designed to prepare them for the national SATs tests in May.

For primary school students working with our maths teachers at home, they can have as many or as few maths lessons as they like each week; scaling up their online tuition as necessary, for example in advance of entrance exams to secondary schools or grammar schools or should we experience future school closures.
