The Third Space Learning End Of Year Report – What Did Teachers Have To Say About Us?

The beginning of July marks the period of the year when school reports get sent out, and it is no different for us here at Third Space Learning. We’ve put together our report, and to do this we’ve gathered a collection of comments and quotes from the teachers who use our 1-to-1, KS2 maths intervention programmes in their classrooms every day, so you can see how we’ve done over the last year!

We’ve used the knowledge gained from 6 years of providing 1-to-1 maths interventions to choose the subjects we know you will be interested in for our report, so we will be taking a look at what teachers have had to say about our impact in the following areas:

Pupil confidence and attainment
Addressing the individual needs of both schools and pupils
Pupils’ verbalisation skills in maths
Making the most of schools budgets
Ease of use and integration within a busy classroom

So without further ado, let’s see how we’ve got on!

Improving pupil confidence & attainment – How did we do?

With teachers coming under ever increasing pressure to help their pupils achieve the expected standard in SATs, many are turning to us to help them get their most at risk pupils over the line and reach their goals.

Teacher Comments:

“Our Year 6 children really enjoy their focused sessions and find it a great way to boost their confidence before taking their SATs.”

Gemma Dienal, Y6 Teacher, Wheatcroft Primary School, Hertfordshire

Teacher Quote on 1-to-1 intervention

“One child cried at the end of SATs because they loved their relationship with their tutor so much!”

George, TA, Horfield Primary School, Bristol

It isn’t just SATs time that keeps us busy here though, we help pupils improve their maths skills all year round!

“The children are engaging with their learning very well and making progress. The team (at Third Space) are very professional and supportive.”

Phillip Ivory, Headteacher, St George’s CofE Primary School, Bolton

Addressing the needs of every pupil and school – How did we do?

Our 1-to-1 maths interventions are designed to be suitable for all. It doesn’t matter if you have one pupil whose confidence in maths needs a boost, or if you have a group of 15 you think could benefit from a 1-to-1 helping hand, we are able to adapt to your schools needs with ease.

This year alone we have worked with over 7,000 pupils from over 700 schools, located from Cornwall right up to Northumberland, and our intelligent assessment helps prepare these pupils in the areas they most need help in. Assessments work alongside teachers to boost confidence in the maths topics that need it most, and the results can be amazing!

Teacher Comments:

“The programme involves learning which is tailored to meet the needs of the children. The support network which is offered is second to none.”

Val Pavey, Woodlands Academy of Learning, Walsall

“As a small school with limited additional adults, Third Space has given us additional capacity to support pupils on a more 1-to-1 basis.”

Tamara Allen, Headteacher, Holme CofE Primary School, Cambridgeshire

“I love the ease with which children’s individual needs are being met – especially with the diagnostic programme.”

Tracy Hart, Deputy Head, Aveley Primary School, Essex

“The sessions are clear, differentiated, individual and based on assessment and friendly patient tutors.”

Jordan Risebrow, Deputy Headteacher, Henderson Green Primary Academy

Getting pupils to verbalise in maths – How did we do?

We know that whilst pupils are developing their maths skills, one of the most important elements is the ability to verbalise problems and answers as this helps to demonstrate a strong understanding of the topic. We want to encourage pupils to communicate with our tutors, so let’s see if we managed to do that!

Teacher Comments:

“Third Space Learning allows for personalised learning as it targets individual needs and is a useful tool to get the kids to articulate their thinking out loud.”

Andrew Knox, Deputy Headteacher, Merton Abbey Primary School, London

Meeting school budgets – How did we do?

We were founded on a belief that education should be available to all, and that is why we have worked so hard to ensure that our 1-to-1 interventions are available to as many schools as possible. Our team are familiar with the monetary pressures that headteachers are under, and that is why we make sure we work with schools ensure every pupil has the chance to succeed in maths.

Every penny counts in schools, so why would you spend some of yours on Third Space?

Teacher Comments:

“There are lots of great resources, and children who are doing 1-to-1 learning are benefiting greatly and the cost is reasonable.”

Gail Johnston, Deputy Headteacher, Biddick Primary School 16/2/18

Integrating maths interventions into classrooms – How did we do?

The key to a good intervention programme is that it does not add to the burden already on teachers. We know how busy teachers are everyday, dealing with ever growing classes and fuller and fuller schedules, so our interventions are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible.

Our online lessons enable teachers to ensure that those pupils who most need help are getting it from highly qualified tutors, and as a result they can focus on the remainder of the class.

Teacher Comments:

“These interventions are based on assessment for learning. Our pupils have personalised support with minimal impact on staff workload.”

Jon Hadley, Deputy Head, Rood End Primary School, 6/3/18

Schools that sign up to our 1-to-1 interventions also get access to our Maths Hub which is filled with CPD videos, resources and more, and these have proved popular with teachers too:

“The resources are perfectly linked with the curriculum and can be used without any adaptation.”

Jodie Moore, Class Teacher, Christ Church CoE Primary School, Oldbury

We’re happy with our end of year report, but we are always looking to grow, improve and offer your school more from our KS2 maths intervention programmes

We know that our tutors do a fantastic job in helping young minds get to grips with maths, but we are always looking to improve what we do. We are:

Constantly updating our curriculum to closely match that in schools across England and Wales

Working on ways to improve the technology we utilise to make our 1-to-1 interventions even more affordable

Talking to schools to see other ways in which we can help

Providing hundreds of incredible resources, both free and premium, on the Maths Hub for schools to use
