Surds are numbers written as square roots. Surds are used to give very accurate values for answers by using square roots of non square numbers. Surds are irrational numbers. When written as decimals surds go on endlessly with no pattern. You cannot write irrational numbers as fractions with integer numerators and denominators.Β
We can sometimes simplify surds by taking out any square factors of the number under the root. A surd is in its simplest form when the number under the root sign has no factors which are square numbers.Β
Looking forward, students can then progress to additional number worksheets, for example a fractions worksheet or a rounding worksheet.
