White Rose Maths Resources

If your school is similar to 70% of other primary schools in England, you’re likely to be:

  • following the White Rose small steps.
  • looking for suitable White Rose Maths resources to supplement these small steps!

We speak to hundreds of teachers and headteachers every week about the one to one maths intervention programmes we offer and we hear similar comments a lot.

So, in response to feedback and requests from lots of teachers we have created several series of White Rose Maths resources deliberately aimed at those following the White Rose small steps.

These resources include:

  • White Rose Lesson Slides, Block by Block for the Autumn Term, Spring Term and Summer Term (Download a Free Taster Pack here)
  • White Rose Maths Worksheets, these are to accompany the lesson slides. Both slides and worksheets contain answers!
  • White Rose Maths Independent Recap Home Learning Worksheets for when you need additional questions alongside the lessons. These all include a mix of fluency and reasoning questions and can be used with minimal additional support.
  • White Rose Maths Code Crackers Worksheets to use as retrieval practice either at the end of each block or later on in the year to support children’s recall and retention of prior learning.
  • White Rose Maths Worked Examples which encourage pupils to find, explain and correct errors, not just focus and on finding the correct answer.

Links to all these White Rose maths resources can be found below.

If you just want to find out about Third Space Learning’s White Rose Maths resources, this short video will help.

FAQs about White Rose Maths

For anyone not aware of White Rose, the following should give you a bit of background before you start. If this is not news to you, jump straight the White Rose Maths Planning links below.

What is White Rose Maths?

White Rose Maths is the term generally used for the scheme of work or scheme of learning developed originally by the White Rose Maths Hub. The White Rose SOL takes the main learning objectives from the national curriculum and breaks them down into teaching blocks across each term. Time is built in for maths assessments and for recapping at the end of the term. The topics into which the curriculum is broken down are known as the White Rose small steps.
The website homepage is available here: https://whiterosemaths.com

Is White Rose Maths free?

Yes and no! The White Rose Maths Scheme and the structured small steps progression is free for all primary schools to use (and it starts right down at EYFS stage). In addition during the Covid-19 lockdown the White Rose hub started releasing some of their resources for use at home, but these were usually just for ‘week’ in the block that schools should have been teaching. However the majority of the White Rose resources are now paid for premium resources.

Why do people use White Rose Maths?

Well, the fact the the scheme of learning is free is a big incentive to schools and school leaders managing a tight primary school budget. But there are some clear advantages and disadvantages of using the White Rose SOL.

What are the advantages of White Rose Maths

The main advantages of White Rose maths are as follows:
– Small steps provide progression through a topic in a logical way
– Opportunities to go in depth with a topic – by spending a long time on a topic, you can really explore it
– It is perfect for NQTs / RQTs or less confident teachers as it gives examples of fluency, reasoning and problem solving
– Provides sentence stems for some lessons to give structure
– Whole school progression in maths is built in provided all year groups from early years to Year 6 follow it.

What are the disadvantages of White Rose Maths?

There are of course disadvantages of White Rose maths too.
– As it’s a linear curriculum (not spiral), it means that pupils sometimes have a year between topics.
– The White Rose SOL doesn’t include answers for fluency questions which we think is a mistake and adds to teachers’ workload.
– White Rose takes a fully maths mastery approach which means there are no suggestions for differentiation in the classroom at all.
Some lessons move on too quickly e.g. adding fractions with different denominators does not in our opinion have enough time dedicated to it.

What are the alternatives to White Rose Maths

There are lots of other primary maths schemes of work available such as Maths No Problem or Maths Mastery (from the Ark Foundation) but all the rest of these are paid for and some are both very expensive and very intensive. You’ll likely find you don’t need all the resources provided.

At Third Space we’ve taken the best parts of the the White Rose planning and created a flexible and easy to teach scheme of our own through our White Rose Ready To Go Slides and accompanying worksheets and additional resources. Many schools find this not only cheaper than a full scheme’s suite of resources as well as easier to manage.

White Rose Planning

Below we give you a summary of what to expect for each Year group’s White Rose maths planning and link to all the classroom and home learning resources available on the Third Space Learning Maths Hub. The aim of this is to support teachers across your school in their planning around the White Rose Maths curriculum.

There are White Rose maths resources available for every year from Year 1 to Year 6, many of them free for the initial blocks in the term.

White Rose Maths Year 1

The heavy focus in Year 1 on number theory is intended to give new Key Stage 1 pupils a solid grounding in the fundamentals of primary school maths ahead of Year 2 and their first set of SATs. Towards the end of the Spring and Summer terms more advanced topics like ‘Weight and Volume’ and ‘Time’ begin to be taught.

By Year 4 most pupils have a firm grasp of more basic maths skills and their mental maths recall should slowly be becoming automatic even with calculations involving 2 and 3 digit numbers. Security in times tables knowledge up to 12 x 12 is important, and reasoning should begin to come to the fore when pupils are presented with questions that really challenge them. Topics that will be covered this year include time, geometry and area.

By the time pupils reach Year 5 they should be confident with both one and two-step problems using the four operations, either singularly or mixed operation problems. Whilst there is still a focus on times tables, more of a focus will be on further mental strategies. Topics such including statistics, decimals and the properties of shapes will all be taught over the course of Year 5.

The work that takes part in Year 6 maths lessons is a mixture of consolidating previously taught topics and strategies and new concepts and further challenge too. Pupils should be working independently now and be able to work on three-step problems. Topics such as fractions, algebra and investigations are all taught in Year 6, laying the groundwork for Year 7. Topics like ‘Problem Solving’ and ‘Investigations’ are also introduced in the run-up to SATs.

White Rose Planning With Third Space Learning Maths Resources

Now you’ve seen what White Rose Maths resources are available for you from Third Space Learning, here we take a more indepth look at the Lesson slides as they are likelhy to form the core of your white rose lesson planning with Third Space.

The idea is that they should save you lots of time. They’ve been developed by maths mastery teachers to match the White Rose small steps and require little preparation from you except for an awareness of what you’re teaching, any concrete resources or maths manipulatives you’ll need, and any supporting worksheets you want to use.

These ready-to-go lesson slides are intended for mixed-ability, whole class, mastery maths teaching, with differentiation made possible by the level of adult or peer support, the pacing of activities, or the continued use of concrete pictorial abstract representations (e.g. bar modelling) to support learning throughout each lesson.

What you can expect from the Third Space Learning White Rose Lesson Slides Step By Step

Watch the video to find out more about the lesson slides available from Third Space Learning

Step 1: Starter Activity

Each lesson begins with a starter activity designed to warm the children up for their mathematical learning. Our starters are designed to allow them to begin reasoning from the first slide. The initial slides also cover the key information that children will need for the topic.

Step 2: Talking Time

We then move into a sequence of talking time slides – having been teachers ourselves we well know that moment when you’ve thought of one addition calculation or word problem about percentages, but somehow the class manage to answer it really quickly and… your mind’s gone blank!

Step 3: Practice Time

Before an activity (when children are set off to work independently, in groups, pairs or with their one:one adult support), we provide at least a few demonstration questions: one for you to model the strategy relevant to each day’s lesson, another for your pupils to work through in tandem with you, and others for the class to attempt independently, in pairs, as a table group, or with the support of a more able peer or their one-to-one adult – all the while allowing you another opportunity to assess their readiness for the activity ahead.

Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving in Every Lesson

The first activity or two focus on achieving fluency in each day’s areas of maths, be it recognising the values of digits within numbers, mental multiplication, or subtracting a fraction from a mixed number.

The final activities within each of our ready-to-go lesson slides tend more towards reasoning and problem-solving tasks, allowing each child (regardless of how their ability has been perceived in the past) to attempt a task that otherwise might have been considered a ‘gifted and talented’ or greater depth challenge.

Each of our lesson slides closes with an evaluation task. An opportunity for the children to finish the lesson as they began, reasoning and explaining what they have recently learnt about maths – and a final opportunity for you to assess their progress, mathematical vocabulary and the depths they have achieved as a result of their learning during that day’s mathematical tasks and activities.

What Teachers Say About The Third Space Learning White Rose Style PowerPoints

Time is precious in the classroom, and our PowerPoints have proven popular amongst teachers all around the UK since we relaunched them this year.

The following are just a flavour of what teachers have been saying about them so far:

Amazing! High quality, excellent range of visual representations, contexts which are relevant to the children. I can’t speak highly enough of these resources.

They have been able to help with work/life balance:

Thanks to you I’ve been able to spend some time with my kids this week instead of them seeing the top of my laptop. It’s very much appreciated by my family.

The PowerPoints are a fantastic way to save time:

They have been fantastic. A huge thank you to whoever designed or made them. I emailed all of the Key Stage 2 staff about them. I love them and more importantly, they make maths more accessible for all.

Really useful – just downloaded the set and shared with colleagues. Brilliant stuff and delighted you have saved me time and effort next week with planning. Thank you.

We think you will love our White Rose Maths style PowerPoints and resources, so take a look, let us know what you think, and, even better, if you like them, add them to your class pages, kids’ zone, and even sitemap on your school website. Then they’ll be there for everyone!
