All of our addition worksheets and subtraction worksheets available from the Third Space Learning Maths Hub are gathered here. Many of them are free, and all of them are printable and available to download straight away.

All of our addition and subtraction worksheets are grouped by topic and year group so you can clearly find the ones you need. They follow the national curriculum, and are matched to the White Rose Maths scheme of work and most other maths mastery approaches teaching KS1 and KS2 addition and subtraction.

Having easy access to a wide variety of addition and subtraction activities and worksheets is essential for primary school teachers early in the school year, whether you’re working on basic single-digit addition facts with Key Stage 1 pupils, or looking at multi-step subtraction word problems with a Year 6 class.

### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets KS1

At EYFS, young children are developing number sense, including subitising. This is a core stepping stone to other areas of numeracy. Once in Key Stage 1, pupils learn the basics of adding and subtracting numbers. By the end of Year 1, they are expected to know addition and subtraction symbols, basic addition and subtraction facts up to 20, and solve simple one-step problems with 1-digit and 2-digit numbers.

#### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets Year 2

By Year 2 children are expected to fluently use addition number bonds and subtraction facts up to 20 (and use these to derive 2-digit addition facts up to 100), solve more complex addition and subtraction word problems using their addition and subtraction skills, and use the inverse relationship of the two operations to check their calculations. ### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets KS2

Addition and subtraction KS2 introduces pupils to more complex addition and subtraction problems, and more sophisticated methods of solving them. Lower KS2 (Years 3 and 4) focuses on bringing children up to speed with column addition and column subtraction and solving problems involving three and four digit numbers, while upper KS2 (Years 5 and 6) looks at multi-step problems and addition and subtraction involving rounding, decimals etc.

#### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets Year 3

Year 3 is the first time pupils will encounter the formal written method i.e. column addition and column subtraction. This coincides with their beginning to solve problems using larger numbers, and learning to estimate answers based on their knowledge of number facts before solving formally.

#### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets Year 4

Year 4 builds on the foundations laid in Year 3, with pupils continuing to use columnar addition and subtraction with ever increasing numbers. They are also expected to begin solving two-step problems, including deciding which operation is needed for each step.

#### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets Year 5

By Year 5, pupils should be solving addition and subtraction problems involving multiple steps, and numbers with four or more digits, using the formal column method. They should also learn to use rounding to check answers and determine levels of accuracy.

#### Addition and Subtraction Worksheets Year 6

In Year 6, addition and subtraction work will, for the most part, be revision and reinforcement of previous years’ topics. By this point, multi-step addition and subtraction word problems will be common, and may also involve other operations. Pupils will be working with multi-digit addends.

How do I teach my 8 year old addition?

At lower Key Stage 2, 8 year old pupils will learn column addition and subtraction and solve problems involving three and four digit numbers.

Use manipulatives, such as base ten, to introduce column addition and subtraction (at first, with no regrouping then introduce this idea). Then, use manipulatives alongside the written method. Once pupils are secure in their understanding, use our worksheets for Year 3 and Year 4 pupils to build their confidence.

Which comes first add or minus?

Whichever comes first, from left to right.

Addition and subtraction are mathematical operations. BIDMAS tells us in which order to solve these when there are multiple operations in one expression: Brackets, Indices, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction.

How do you teach the relationship between addition and subtraction?

Addition and subtraction are inverse operations, i.e. they are the opposite of each other.

Show this first using counters, then build up to using addition and subtraction expressions with the same numbers to show the relationship between the operations.
