Understanding the Colorado Academic Standards

The state adopted the Common Core in 2010 and reaffirmed that decision in 2018. The Colorado Department of Education states plainly that “we consider ourselves to be a Common Core state.” The Common Core supplies the grade level expectations and evidence outcomes; the standards then add their own Academic Contexts and Connections and the Colorado Essential Skills on top.

Frequently asked questions

Does Colorado use Common Core math?

Yes. The state adopted the Common Core in 2010 and reaffirmed the decision in 2018, and the Colorado Department of Education describes it as a Common Core state. The Common Core forms the grade level expectations and evidence outcomes in the standards, and the state adds its own Academic Contexts and Connections and Essential Skills on top. What are the math standards for Grade 2 in Colorado?

Grade 2 sits inside the four content standards and is organized around the Common Core domains. Students add and subtract within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems (operations and algebraic thinking), work with place value to 1,000 (number and operations in base ten), measure length and work with time and money (measurement and data), and partition shapes (geometry). See the standards: https://www.cde.state.co.us/comath/2020cas-ma-p12

Which grade levels are covered by the Colorado Academic Standards for math?

The Colorado Academic Standards for Mathematics cover preschool through high school. Kindergarten through grade 8 follows the 2020 standards, organized by grade. High school is organized by course and pathway across the same four standards, and a revised set was adopted in May 2026. Every grade combines content with the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice. Find out more: https://www.cde.state.co.us/comath/2020cas-ma-p12

How are Colorado’s math standards structured?

The standards have four content areas: Number and Quantity; Algebra and Functions; Data, Statistics, and Probability; and Geometry. Under each, Grade Level Expectations describe what students should know at a grade, and evidence outcomes give the observable signs of mastery. Roughly seven expectations sit at each grade from kindergarten to grade 8, with 14 at high school.

How is math assessed in Colorado?

The state measures math through the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS), which tests math in grades 3-8 and is built on the state standards. On the 2024 CMAS, about 34% of students in grades 3-8 met or exceeded expectations in math, still below the pre-pandemic level. Structured support outside the classroom can help students rebuild confidence and close gaps.
