Understanding the Georgia math standards

Adopted by the Georgia State Board of Education in 2021, the Georgia K–8 Mathematics Standards were developed by a statewide committee of educators, school leaders, college faculty, and community members. The revised state standards were informed by classroom teachers and align with national and international research on best practices in math education. The standards were fully implemented statewide in the 2023–2024 school year.

Key Features of the Georgia math standards

Standards follow a logical progression, supporting content mastery and readiness for new skills.

Real-world reasoning, statistical reasoning and problem-solving build deep understanding across domains.

New domains – Numerical Reasoning (NR), Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR), Measurement & Data Reasoning (MDR), and Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR) – replace older naming conventions, ensuring each grade’s curriculum builds coherently on prior learning

Mathematical Practices integrated into daily classroom instruction.

Designed to support equitable access for all students, including those who need intervention or enrichment.

Georgia Milestones tests measure mastery of the math standards across all grades, so teachers can plan instructional time effectively.

Frequently asked questions

What’s new about Georgia’s Math Standards?

Georgia’s K–8 Math Standards were adopted in 2021 to replace the Georgia Standards of Excellence. These state standards provide more clarity and coherence, with a focus on conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and real-world application. Each grade in the new standards is now organized into four consistent domains and the language has been refined to support all students. These updates reflect current research and statewide educator input and went into full implementation in the 2023–2024 school year. What are Georgia’s Mathematical Practices?

Georgia’s eight Mathematical Practices describe how students engage in mathematical thinking across all grade levels:
– Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
– Reason abstractly and quantitatively
– Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
– Model with mathematics
– Use appropriate tools strategically
– Attend to precision
– Look for and make use of structure
– Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
These practices support classroom instruction, guide student learning strategies and help students develop a reasonable amount of depth and flexibility in their math understanding.

How are students assessed in math on the Georgia Milestones?

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (GMAS) includes End-of-Grade assessments for Grades 3–8 that are directly aligned to the K–8 math standards. These assessments include selected-response, constructed-response and extended-response items that measure not only procedural fluency but also conceptual understanding, reasoning and real-world application. Milestones results inform both state accountability and local instructional planning so students are on track to meet Georgia’s education goals.

How do the standards support diverse learners and readiness gaps?

Georgia’s new standards for math are designed to be flexible enough to meet the needs of all students, including English learners, students with disabilities and those who need intervention or enrichment. Teachers use differentiated strategies and resources to help every student learn at their own pace. Instruction is designed to be inclusive so every child has meaningful opportunities to engage with grade-level math content.
