Progression in the common core state standards

The Common Core Math Standards are officially called the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM).

Developed through a collaborative effort led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, they provide a coherent progression map of learning standards for K-12 mathematics education within and between each school year.

The CCSSM are comprised of two key components:

  1. Standards for Mathematical Practice which describe the essential math skills, behaviors and habits of mind that students should develop, from elementary through high school.
  2. Standards for Mathematical Content which define what students should understand and be able to do in mathematics. They progress logically from basic number sense through advanced mathematical concepts.

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
