What are the Mathematical Practices in Maryland?
Maryland uses eight Standards for Mathematical Practice, including reasoning abstractly, modeling with math, and attending to precision. These guide instruction and help students build the habits of thinking like mathematicians.
– Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
– Reason abstractly and quantitatively
– Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
– Model with mathematics
– Use appropriate tools strategically
– Attend to precision
– Look for and make use of structure
– Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
How are Maryland math standards assessed?
Students in Grades 3–8 and high school take MCAP Math Assessments, which measure mastery of the MCCRS-M using multi-step problems and real-world applications.
How does tutoring aligned to MCCRS-M help with MCAP?
Tutoring sessions follow MCCRS-M progressions and build fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving – directly supporting student success on MCAP tests. As all lessons are online, tutoring also helps with students understanding and use of technology.
Do Maryland’s standards support diverse learners?
Yes. Maryland provides scaffolds and uses Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure access for English Learners, students with disabilities, and advanced learners.
How does Maryland support advanced math concepts in upper grades?
In middle and high school, Maryland students explore algebra, systems of equations and inequalities, symmetry, and geometric properties. They use functions to represent relationships, apply formulas, write expressions, solve equations, analyze points and intervals on a line, and work with units and terms across math domains.
