Truncation at a glance

Truncating a number is a way of shortening or simplifying the number without rounding it. To truncate a number, we remove all of the digits beyond a certain place value and fill in zeros if necessary to maintain the place value of the number.

A truncated number will always be smaller than or equal to the original value of the number.Β  When truncating a positive number, the truncated number will always appear to the left of the original value on a number line. This is important when considering the limits of accuracy of a truncated number as the lower bound of the number will always be the truncated number itself.Β

Looking forward, students can then progress to additional number worksheets, for example an equivalent fractions & ordering fractions worksheet or simplifying fractions worksheet.
