Exchange rate at a glance

Different countries use different currencies. In the UK we use British pounds. Other currencies include Euros, US dollars, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars and Japanese yen.Β

If we go abroad, the foreign exchange rate allows us to perform a currency conversion and tells us how much of the foreign currency we can get based on our currency. An example of a currency exchange rate is Β£1 = €1.17. For every Β£1 we exchange, we receive €1.17. When using a credit card abroad, an exchange rate is used to convert the currency back to the home country. The total cost of a transaction may therefore be different to the value paid abroad.

Β Looking forward, students can then progress to additional exchange and conversion rates worksheets, and other ratio and proportion worksheets for example aΒ ratio worksheet or a simplifying and equivalent ratios worksheet.Β
