All of our interventions were for reading
Our math scores had plateaued despite changing curriculums. As a school, all of our interventions are for reading – that’s why we chose to target students’ needs with Third Space Learning’s AI math tutoring specifically.
We wanted the tutoring program to give them grade-level instruction based on the units they were just about to start or were currently in, rather than focusing on filling gaps from below grade level. Third Space Learning designed a specific program to suit our needs. It was seamless. I just said, “Here’s what we’d like to do and here’s why”, and the team made it happen.
A true ‘double dose’ math intervention
We started with 25 kids who fell between the 40th and 60th percentile in terms of achievement. They then each worked one-on-one with Skye, the AI tutor, twice a week for 30 minutes.
What they get from the AI tutor Skye either affirms what they’ve been learning in class or gives them a head start. They’re learning in two different settings, through two different methods: online with AI and in-person with a teacher. It is – for the first time ever – a true “double dose” math intervention for our students.
I don’t have 25 people I could push into the building
I don’t have 25 people that I could push into the building on that schedule. I can’t flood a classroom with adults who all have the content knowledge, the education experience, and the understanding of the system that we’re trying to implement – and who could all do it with fidelity. That’s just not possible.
But what is possible now that we have Third Space Learning is to have 25 kids getting one-on-one tutoring at once in a class without the teacher having to pull out one student at a time.
They say things out loud to Skye they wouldn’t normally say
I was excited that it wasn’t text-based AI but spoken word. I liked that the kids could explain their thinking. The kids have been so engaged. They ask me, “Are we having tutoring today? Can we see Skye today?” They talked to and about Skye like a real person, and loved that Skye spoke back, held conversations and even asked how their weekend was.
When they put the headset on, they feel like they’re in their own little world. They say things out loud to Skye about their math thinking that they wouldn’t normally say. I could hear their internal monologue, certainly more of it than I would have if they were just sitting in class. Especially the students who are more introverted or shy, those kids find learning with Skye especially engaging.
100% of students with low growth made measurable progress
Our MAP data shows that 100% of all students in the program who had low growth before starting made measurable progress by the end of the year. 75% of students who had low growth and low achievement in December moved into high growth and high achievement, vs 18% of students in the same group who didn’t receive the AI tutoring.
“As administrators, we’re always looking for that silver bullet. This is pretty close!”
One-on-one interaction is what so many kids need, but providing that kind of instruction simultaneously just isn’t normally possible in school. With Third Space Learning, it is.
