### Rotation at a glance

Rotation is a transformation which involves turning a 2d shape around a centre of rotation. To perform a rotation we need to know the centre of rotation, angle of rotation and direction of rotation (clockwise or anti-clockwise/counterclockwise).

It is helpful to use tracing paper when performing rotations as it can be tricky to visualise the position a shape will move to after it has been rotated. For example, to rotate triangle ABC through 180o about the origin, you would first place a piece of tracing paper over the triangle and the point (0,0). You would trace triangle ABC, or its vertices, onto the tracing paper and then turn it through a half turn, pinning the tracing paper at the point (0,0). You would then see where the rotated shape should be drawn.

Rotation questions can also ask you to describe a given rotation. When describing rotations it is important to include the three required pieces of information, the centre of rotation, the angle of rotation and direction of rotation.

Rotation is linked to rotational symmetry which is the number of times an object will fit exactly back on top of itself when it is rotated through a full turn. For example, when a square is rotated through a full turn it will fit on top of itself exactly 4 times, every quarter turn.
