Why 1-to-1 maths interventions are such an effective strategy to close the pupil premium attainment gap
The SATs results for our pupil premium children have historically been very low, and we were really looking for something that could fill a gap. With Third Space, our maths progress has improved a lot, and we’ve gone from 40% ARE to 70% ARE this year!

The State of Pupil Premium in 2019
Pupil premium funding was introduced by the government in 2011 to close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and non pupil premium eligible pupils. As of the 2018-2019 school year, pupil premium funding for primary school pupils was as follows:
- £1,320 for children who have qualified for free school meals at any point in the past six years.
- £2,300 for children who are or have been looked after under local authority care for more than one day.
- £300 for children from service families who receive a child pension from the Ministry of Defence.
Although primary schools can decide how they spend their pupil premium budget, they are held accountable for the pupil premium strategies they decide upon by Ofsted, and they have to demonstrate that they are using the funds appropriately and making a difference to the attainment of disadvantaged pupils.
Implement an effective pupil premium strategy with Third Space
It can be difficult for SLT members to know which pupil premium strategies to commit to. The EEF Toolkit is a good start, but if you’ve identified a need in your school to close the attainment gap in maths then Third Space Learning’s 1-to-1 maths interventions are hard to beat. Not only does Third Space Learning have the experience of teaching over 3,000 pupils every year who are in receipt of pupil premium funding, but we know our maths intervention programmes work.
Target your pupil premium budget where it’s needed
When you sign up to our maths interventions, you are in total control. You can choose the number of pupils you wish to sign up, switch the places between pupil premium children in different year groups and put a firm focus on those children that are struggling with their confidence in maths.
With the ability to switch between different pupil premium pupils, you can ensure you are helping the learners that most need the additional support, all without making more of a dent in your budget.
Link pupil premium spending clearly to impact
With pupil premium spending comes a need to show the impact it has had on pupils to Ofsted, governors and even parents. Our reports allow you to track and share the impact of the interventions.
After every tuition session feedback is available on how well every child has progressed in that particular lesson, which learning objectives they have achieved and whether additional time was spent plugging gaps in their knowledge or addressing misconceptions.
The pupil premium impact reports are shared with you on day of the intervention and accessible at any time through our online platform, saving time and providing valuable insight for teachers planning lessons.
Plug individual gaps with personalised lessons
1-to-1 teaching has been shown to be one of the most effective ways of raising attainment in maths – especially when it comes to working with disadvantaged pupils – but it’s traditionally very expensive and therefore not a realistic option for all schools.
By taking 1-to-1 teaching online, we’re making this kind of support more accessible for all schools and all school budgets. With Third Space Learning, your chosen pupils are taught by their own dedicated tutor, meaning every lesson is fully personalised to their own needs and abilities. It’s an approach that has already helped to close the attainment gap for the 50,000+ pupils who’ve been through our online 1-to-1 programmes.
Access additional high quality maths resources to raise atttainment for all pupils
Alongside 1-to-1 maths tuition for target pupils, every school that signs up to our maths intervention programmes gets free, school-wide access to our online resource library, the Third Space Maths Hub. Hundreds of high quality resources are available to download to enhance maths teaching and learning for the benefit of all pupils.
This ensures you’re making the most of your pupil premium budget, unlocking access to expert-created progress packs, lesson activities and CPD which reduce workload and boost attainment across your school.
