“For the pupils we targeted it absolutely worked”

The Aylesbury Vale Academy

Location: Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire
School size: 1000+ pupils
Intervention Type: KS2 SATs Intervention
Intervention Pupil Type: Pupil Premium

We identified a range of target pupils, from those working below expected standards to those trying to achieve greater depths.

We found TSL to be brilliant for all these kids. This is because for the ones who are below the expected standard, the pacing aspects really suited them, and then for the ones who were working at greater depth we found that 1-to-1 suited them because they were being pushed again at the right pace. I think that’s the huge benefit of using Third Space Learning.

Third Space Learning suits those pupils that lack a little bit of confidence

Personally, I think that the pupils that would benefit most from a Third Space Learning Intervention are the ones that lack a little bit of confidence, and also the pupils that are quite happy to being independent. I had one pupil that was working below the expected standard, but she quite liked working and was actually very self-sufficient, but in a class of 29 students it was hard for her. The 1-to-1 really suited her and quite a few of the others that were working on low confidence, and it built them up because the praised based system really, really works.

All of the children achieved well thanks to the interventions

I think the big thing is the fact that I had 8 children using the intervention, 7 of whom were working below the expected standard. All of those 7 met the expected standard, with the one pupil that we were hoping could achieve greater depth also achieved greater depth! So, what we had targeted absolutely worked, and I would say that doing the intervention was fundamental to that.

Third Space Learning interventions are great value for money

Another thing I would say is that it’s great value for money as it allows 1-to-1 teaching to take place, which no teacher can provide with the best will in the world. Additionally, if you plan it properly, then you can deliver other interventions to the rest of the class, whilst those children are having their bespoke learning. It provides a fantastic opportunity for bespoke learning for the children that need it most.

“The children absolutely loved it because it was pitched directly to them. It might sound really small, but the fact that the tutors got the children’s names right straight away, and they said hello to them personally had the kids hooked."
